COUPLES THERAPY & PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELLING

Couples counselling
Congratulations on taking the brave step of seeking support. For many people I have worked with, reaching out for psychological counselling or therapy is a significant milestone. It also reflects that you are taking responsibility for your own life.
There are numerous reasons why couples seek support. Whatever your personal reasons may be, by seeking help to improve the way you navigate your relationship, you are already on the path to improving your life.
I offer therapy for any adult facing challenges in their relationship: whether you are married, in a partnership, separated, divorced, or in the process of divorcing; whether you are straight or gay. Regardless of your age, race, or social background, I address various issues, including infidelity, communication difficulties, adjusting to step-families, balancing work and home life, and dealing with the effects of mental illness on relationships.
What kind of treatment can you expect?
In the first session, both of you will have the opportunity to describe your situation in your own words and share the difficulties you are facing in your relationship. Together, we will untangle the key issues and define the goals of your therapy.
During your sessions, we will closely examine your emotions, thoughts, and attitudes, and how they impact your life. Our focus will be on identifying areas that require change. Together, we will develop new perspectives and practice new behaviours that can positively influence your relationship. In general, this process allows you to express your authentic self, leading to greater balance and satisfaction.
We will also work on communication skills, which many people find immensely helpful. However, communication strategies are often seen as a quick fix that may relieve stress in high-pressure situations without necessarily creating long-term change. To achieve more lasting improvements, it is important to also explore your past. Gaining a better understanding of how you were raised to think and cope with challenges can shed light on how these patterns continue to influence your relationships today. Often, people discover that certain behaviours, such as avoiding confrontation or adopting a dominant stance, were once helpful in earlier stages of life. The key question becomes whether these behaviours remain necessary or appropriate. When it is clear that a shift in perspective is needed, we can work together to make that change.
Procedure
Sessions generally take place every two weeks. This allows time to reflect on and process what was discussed during the session. If you are going through a particularly challenging time, we can discuss whether more frequent sessions would be beneficial. In some cases, an additional 25-minute session may suffice. A higher frequency of sessions will only be recommended for a limited period.
Throughout this process, I will provide a warm, confidential, and safe space where you can explore any issues you are currently struggling with, at a pace that works for you. If this approach resonates with you, feel free to reach out. Together, we can determine if I am the right person to support you and what we can achieve together.
